Actually, you can use an antenna to get local channels on Apple TV, albeit with the help of some other devices. We'll show you how below. But there are also ways to stream local channels online with your Apple TV.

Most major skinny bundles offer live local feeds of some or all of the major networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC). Keep in mind, however, that such feeds are available in select markets only. You're likely to be covered, but double-check to make sure; or you can take advantage of a free trial to be sure that you're getting all of the channels that you want.

Already well-known for its on-demand content, Hulu is also a great way to watch local channels on Apple TV, thanks to their Hulu + Live TV service. Hulu + Live TV has deals with local affiliates of major networks as well as with many RSNs, so those in eligible markets will have plenty of live local and regional TV to watch on Apple TV. You can read our review of Hulu Plus Live TV to learn more.

DIRECTV STREAM is a live TV streaming service and it's a great way to get local channels on Apple TV. People in eligible markets get live feeds of major networks with their DIRECTV STREAM plan, and the service also offers some regional sports networks. You can read more about the service in our DIRECTV STREAM review.

fuboTV has a flair for sports, so expect solid coverage of RSNs here. It also offers some local affiliates of major networks in eligible markets, making it a great way to watch both regional and local channels on Apple TV. You can read our review of fuboTV to learn more, or you can test it out for yourself by signing up for the service's free trial.

Google's skinny bundle option is another great way to watch live TV on Apple TV, including local channels. Despite the sometimes tense relationship between Google and Apple, this app plays nice with Apple TV. You'll get live local feeds (in select markets) of the major networks, plus some RSNs. Check out our YouTube TV review to learn more or sign up for the service's free trial offer.

The antenna you'll need in order to watch free over-the-air TV will plug directly into your TV, with no streaming box required. But what if you want to use an antenna to watch live local channels on Apple TV? You don't necessarily need an Apple TV in this equation, but it's nice to have all of your content in one place (and on one input on your TV). Well, good news: You can watch local channels on Apple TV using an antenna, as long as you get a little creative with it.

The Apple TV Channels program is essentially an à la carte selection of TV channels and streaming services that you can subscribe to within the Apple TV app. This allows you to consolidate most (if not all) of your streaming services into one place, with Apple getting a cut of every Apple TV subscription.

In addition to Apple TV Channels, the Apple TV app also integrates a few other major streaming services. They will be listed alongside other channels in the app, but launching them will open a third-party app to stream the media itself. Before you ask, no, Netflix is not included.

Apple Channels is the company's new service that offers customers in more than 100 countries subscription access to premium networks such as HBO, Showtime, Epix, Smithsonian Channel, Starz and Tastemade. Other channels, such as CBS All-Access and MTV Hits, are coming later this year. Right now, if you signed up for every channel package available, however, you'd pay $97 a month.

And instead of pushing viewers out of the Apple TV app and into another app, like HBO, Starz or Showtime, Apple TV Channels immediately begins streaming the show, which helps keep people inside Apple's ecosystem. There's a trade-off for this, however. Anyone who subscribes to the channels can only watch them within the TV app. The subscription won't work on other platforms such as Sony's PlayStation or a Roku box.

Next question - if I were to make an app like HBO GO that allowed users to purchase and view video content, where would I put the video content itself? Does apple host it or would I have to post it to a server like Amazon? Is there a limit to how much content can be hosted by Apple if in fact that is the way it is done? If so, plealse point me to the reference in the documentation for that if there is one. Thank you again!

You watch from within the TV app itself, with no additional apps, accounts or passwords required. Instead of being bounced out to the HBO Now app, for example, you can watch your Succession episode within the Apple TV app itself. Up to six family members can also share Apple TV channels subscriptions via Apple's Family Sharing feature using their Apple ID and password. You can also download TV shows and movies from channels to an iPhone or iPad.

All of the devices with the Apple TV app also let you subscribe to and pay for channels from directly within the TV app. The exception once again is Fire TV, which only lets you watch channels you've subscribed to elsewhere.

Nope, sorry. All of the Apple TV channels cost the same as they would if you'd subscribed via a separate app, like HBO Now ($15 per month), Showtime ($12 per month) or Tastemade ($3 per month). All of the available Apple TV channels also cost the same as their counterparts from competing subscription aggregators, namely Amazon Prime Video Channels and The Roku Channel.

Downloads within the Apple TV app are available only for Apple TV channels and Apple TV Plus. Browsing to the channel and selecting a show on an iPad or iPhone will display a download icon. Clicking on it will download the episode or movie, where it will be available for viewing (no Wi-Fi or cellular connection required) in the Library section of the TV app.

On Apple devices, for the 90-odd services and apps that aren't channels, the Apple TV app only lets you browse those services and apps' TV shows and movies, not play them. Clicking on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from within the Apple TV app will bounce you out to the Amazon Prime Video app to watch, for example.

And for these apps that aren't channels, the TV app doesn't provide any way to download shows and movies for offline viewing -- for that you'll have to use the individual apps, which may or may not offer downloads. The Amazon Prime app has offered downloads for years, for example, and the Hulu app is finally enabling downloads in late 2019.

The only difference here is that the channels themselves are different. So we're not talking about the channels that you're used to. You're not going to get TBS and TNT, and USA, and HGTV, whatever else you were used to, these are going to be the stepchildren of those premium channels. I call them premium channels, you know what I mean. Anyway, so they do have a lot of really good content. It's just not the content that you're used to, but that doesn't mean it's not worth watching. So check out Stirr for that sort of thing.

And I also mentioned Pluto TV. It's going to be very similar just with a different selection of channels. And I would argue a slightly better one, but it's also going to have that on-demand stuff that I was talking about. So the on-demand section, I'm pointing this out on Pluto TV specifically because they actually have a really good on-demand section.

Subscribers can watch and download shows and movies both online and offline, including HBO in the US. Through Family Sharing, up to six family members can share subscriptions to Apple TV channels using just their Apple ID and password.

The Passport benefit is separate from these on-demand channels offered by Amazon Prime or Apple. If you wish to view Passport videos on PBS.org or through the PBS Video app, you must have the Passport benefit, acquired by supporting your local PBS station.

Monthly fees for on-demand channels vary by channel. On Amazon Prime Video, in addition to the monthly cost of the channel, it requires the base Amazon Prime membership fee of $119/year or a Prime Video membership fee of $8.99/month.

The bundle format is in decline, with customers balking at paying for dozens of channels they never watch and streaming services offering the chance to pay only for the programming you do want to watch. There might be no more critical concern for Major League Baseball, where teams have grown accustomed to ever-higher payments from cable and satellite companies, all based on the concept that each home subscriber should pay perhaps $5 per month for a team, even if 95% of those customers do not watch the games.

With select eligible products, when you buy a new TV through Best Buy, you'll enjoy up to 30 days free of FuboTV Pro access. Don't know what FuboTV is? No problem, we'll break it down. It's an excellent streaming service, not unlike Netflix or Hulu, except it provides access to a bevy of live cable-like channels. You can watch live sports, live shows, news broadcasts, and much much more. Since a month of FuboTV costs $70, you're saving exactly that much with this offer, not including any deals you get on a TV. Don't sleep on it, especially if you're already thinking about getting a new TV. Grab that deal below or keep reading to learn more about the offer and the eligible TV sets.

Available only in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico and U.S.V.I.). Requires compatible device and data connection; data charges may apply. Not all channels available to stream. Limited to up to 5 concurrent streams. Restrictions apply. Visit directv.com/app for more information.

The Apple TV app?which sits right next to all the other popular streaming apps on the Apple TV interface?is a pretty integrated platform. Not only does the new Apple TV service live inside it, but with the Apple, TV Channels feature?introduced in 2019?you can access just the channels you want, without having to download any apps. For instance?if you subscribe to EPIX from within the Apple TV app, the video is hosted by Apple, and the billing handled by Apple too. 041b061a72
